FAME BAND AUDITIONS

Calling all 8th grade and high school musicians!


The FAME band application is live and available to fill out online. Come grow as a musician, participate in amazing performances, and make life long friends in our band family. Come and be a part the the best band in Douglas County!

Teacher Recommendations - Students should share this link with teachers who they’ve asked to complete a recommendation form: DCSS Magnet Teacher Recommendation Form. Recommendations from your math, science, English, and foreign language (if applicable) teachers are requested by most magnet programs.

The FAME Band audition process is designed to discern the students entry skill level, and ensemble placement. We do ask student to come as prepared as possible for the audition process. Each student will be scored by the director of bands, and final results will be mailed home from the FAME Magnet Office. Contact the director of bands at lebarron[email protected] for instrumental audition questions prior to your audition. Please send all application questions to FAME Director, Ms. Ashley Cleveland, at ​Ashley.Cleveland@dcssga.org. ​ You will find the link to the FAME application by clicking the link below. ​

FAME Band Audition Requirments

Audition Materials

Wind Players
  • Major Scales (Concert Scales): Quarter Note-8th Note Pattern and Arpeggio
    • F, Bb, Eb, Ab 
    • Level I: One Octave
    • Level II: Two Octave where applicable 
  • Chromatic scale
    • Level I: one octave; ranged for your instrument
    • Level II: two octaves; ranged for your instrument
  • Sight Reading (Required)
  • Etude (Level II scoring)
    • Must be a published etude or a excerpt from a concert work that showcases your musical ability. Marching/Pep band music is not an acceptable etude performance. 
    • GMEA All-State etudes are acceptable.
  • Auditions determine your level score. Level score determines your band placement.
Percussionists 
**Percussionist will not have to demonstrate mallet or timpani technique for virtual auditions.**
  • Snare drum
    • rudiments (open-closed-open):
    • long roll, five stroke roll, paradiddle, flam tap, Drag Tap
  • Mallets
    • Major Scales: Quarter Note-8th Note Pattern and Arpeggio
      • F, Bb, Eb, Ab
        • Level I: One Octave
        • Level II: Two Octave where applicable 
    • Sight-reading (Required) on Snare and/or Mallets
      • Level I: Sight-Reading on one
      • Level II: Sight-Reading on both
    • Etude (Level II scoring)
      • Choose snare or mallets
      • Must be a published etude or a excerpt from a concert work that showcases your musical ability. Marching/Pep band music is not an acceptable etude performance. 
      • GMEA All-State etudes are acceptable.
  • Auditions determine your level score. Level score determines your band placement.
  • Drum Line Auditions are separate from FAME Band auditions. A second audition will be needed. Find information on drum line auditions here.
Here are scale sheets and etudes that you may use to prepare for your FAME Band audition. You may bring your own etude/solo if you so desire. Etudes DO NOT have to be memorized.

Horn Players: The etudes posted below have two etudes of contrasting styles. Please choose only one etude for your FAME audition. It does not matter which etude you choose.

Percussion Players: You have the choice of the mallet or snare etude. You will sight read on both during your audition.
